,I can't even qualify for AIME, and I'm a sophomore. I focused on abstract algebra and theoretical computer science (my two main areas of interest), but also enjoyed courses on the p-adics, history of math (basically the only "soft" class offered), probability theory, and counterexamples in analysis. The only bad thing I can say about the program is that the first two weeks, called root class, doesn't offer much to people who already know linear algebra or have attended the program before. The PROMYS Foundation is also able to accept donations from outside the United States. If you guys apply, good luck with the applications! ,What's definitely important at Ross, and presumably important at PROMYS, is a willingness to work steadily and THINK about what you are doing. I was probably in the upper quintile (maybe even decile) in terms of how much time I spent on math: I spent 8+ solid hours on the problem sets. I wouldn't have enjoyed the math I learned at Mathcamp nearly as much if I had not attended PROMYS beforehand, because PROMYS paved the way for me to be able to learn the high-level stuff in the first place. ,I would allow a few days for a teacher to write a recommendation. Even though the social scene at PROMYS is abysmal compared to Mathcamp, the mathematical experience you gain is irreplaceable. These camps won't guarantee you a spot in HYPSM etc. I can grasp math concepts easily...or at least I have been grasping them quickly. Many of the students at MathILy-er join MathILy and other selective programs the next year.
